Namibia takes the stage at African Energy Week 2024

Last year, Namibia made headlines at African Energy Week (AEW) 2023 when late President Dr. Hage Geingob was honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award. His recognition celebrated Namibia's leadership in the energy sector and its strides toward sustainable development. This year, Namibia returns to AEW 2024 with a focus on expanding investment opportunities in both its oil and green hydrogen sectors.

Namibia's participation in African Energy Week (AEW) 2024, held from November 4-8 in Cape Town, will highlight the country's growing prominence in Africa's energy landscape. This prestigious event serves as a platform for project operators, financiers and government officials to discuss the continent's energy future and Namibia's delegation will play a crucial role in shaping these discussions.

The Namibian Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, is expected to address the conference, presenting new opportunities for collaboration in Namibia's oil and gas sectors. This follows significant offshore discoveries by industry giants such as Shell and TotalEnergies, which have positioned Namibia as a major frontier for oil exploration. Alweendo’s participation underscores Namibia’s commitment to accelerating investments in its energy sector, with the country's goal of achieving first oil production by 2030.

Alongside the oil and gas sector, Namibia will showcase its ambitions in green hydrogen. As the country works toward becoming a global green hydrogen hub, AEW 2024 provides a critical platform for Namibia to attract international investors to its green hydrogen projects. With several pilot projects set to begin in 2024, Namibia is moving forward with plans to produce large-scale green hydrogen, leveraging its renewable energy potential. Commissioner Maggy Shino will also be presenting during the event, providing insights into Namibia’s hydrocarbon developments and long-term gas production plans, notably the Kudu Gas Development, which is set to increase the country’s power generation capacity by 2026.

Namibia's participation in AEW 2024 not only reflects its ambitions to become a leading energy player in Africa but also offers an opportunity to establish strategic partnerships with global industry leaders, further promoting economic growth and energy security for the region.
